Electric Rickshaw

Today lung capacity of at least 50% of Indian children is lower than the global average. This is primarily because of the air pollution created by diesel engines that are used almost universally for all road vehicles in India.

The projection for e-rickshaws in India is 50 million by 2025. Each e-rickshaw will carry 100 kg of lead in the form of a battery, which needs replacement twice a year. The lead in the batteries gets recycled in new battery and in the process about 5 kg is lost to the environment. So approximately 500 million kg of lead will be released every year in the atmosphere by 2025. If the system is not changed, both the lung and brain capacity of Indian children will be effected.

Novel Aquatech Pty Limited is a privately held Australian company that has been operating for 14 years. We have a vision to replace these lead acid batteries for the e-rickshaws in India with lithium batteries  and establishing charging stations. This is a commercially viable project with significant environmental and social impact. The technology has been developed in conjunction with UNSW.

Financial Return

There is a return on investment of approximately 17% forecast.

Social Return

There are a significant number of social and environmental benefits forecast. The adoption of this technology will allow the establishment of a carbon neutral inexpensive rural transport system. This use of renewable energy for transportation will reduce the introduction of lead pollution in the environment. It is also forecast to create 22 rural jobs from an initial investment in the field of AU$110,000. In summary, this will help develop a new technology based rural industry in the developing Indian economy.
